Shock Headline: Ariz. referendum drives targeting new law dropped!

Even funnier than the headline are the reasons that the organizers give for dropping them:

Andrew Chavez, a professional petition circulator involved in one of the efforts, said its backers pulled the plug after concluding they might not be able to time their petition filings in such a way as to put the law on hold pending a 2012 public vote.

Jon Garrido, the chief organizer of the other drive, attributed its end to a belief that the law would have been subject to legal protections under Arizona’s Constitution if approved by Arizona voters.

The actual reason. People in Arizona support the law by 70% and throughout the country by 60%. Plus you have stuff like this going on. They would not only lose, they would lose spectacularly!

When you have the Suns trying to remove fans who disagree with their political views these guys are getting nervous.

The last thing they need is to show just how little support they actually have.

…and asked him for his reaction on the Phoenix Suns business today.

He informed me he thought this was an extremely short sighted and foolish move by both the Suns and the NBA that would likely backfire. He believes that most of the people complaining haven’t actually read the law and are working off of what the media has said.

I brought up the example of the Suns checking tickets or letting people in without enforcing their own admission rules he said that gets to the point of the issue.

I’m grateful for the Minuteman project for getting back to me. I’m still waiting to hear back from the Suns concerning my interview requests via both phone and e-mail.

I ask again, will the Suns decide to check for tickets of people trying to get in? Will they decide to check the tickets of people sitting in seats to see if they are in the right seats? What will they use to determine if they check. Will they profile the people in the stadium?

Update: Wouldn’t it be interesting if the Minuteman project decided to try to get into tonight’s game without tickets as a protest? I gave them a call to suggest it.

The Phoenix Suns have decided they have a niche market and want to support it.

The Phoenix Suns on Tuesday announced that they will be wearing an alternative jersey identifying them as “Los Suns” during Wednesday’s playoff game to voice the team’s disapproval for Arizona’s tough new immigration law.

The League seems to be standing behind this and of course the media is drooling all over them.

I’m all for it myself, if the League in General and the Suns in particular wants to alienate a segment of their potential market and not allows Sports to be an escape that’s just fine. As I’ve mentioned before you can make a good living off a niche market. I would remind them of my favorite clip from this movie starting at 5:48 to 6:08

If the NBA & the Suns believe their customers are Mercado muy especializado that’s fine. I would have thought in a rough economy you would want to grab from a different niche say from the 10,000 instead of the 300 but hey it’s their call. If TBS wants their sports coverage and the advertisers want to be associated with a cause opposed by 60% of the country then that fine too.

That’s how business works. It’s their business and they can run it any way they want.
