I wonder if they protest chemical engineers?

You know every now and then you read something that is so mindbogglingly absurd that you can’t believe it is real.

Major PSH from a group that is, and I am not making this up, protesting that ROTC offers arms training. Two things leap out at me here. One is that they really think military training is equal to criminal activity. And two that they don’t seem to think learning about arms is educational. Familiarity with arms is a skill that can save lives, in more ways than one.

Via Glenn. I wonder if these guys protest professers who teach chemical engineers since they teach kids about dangerous chemicals or civil engineers since they build thing like oil rigs that polute, or mechanical engineers who might get you a job in a defense plant etc etc etc.

I think that Don in comments has a fine idea:

Let’s take a page from their book. Download the word doc from the link just below “WRITE, PHONE, FAX THE SCHOOL BOARD BEFORE FEB. 10″; it’s all of 2 pages. It gives the names and addresses of the Board on the first page. Write the Board and tell them you support the weapons training program within JROTC.

Even though they say email is less effective, perhaps flooding email with support will be a good thing. In fact, here’s the email addr: board@sandi.net .

Do take note that it is a group and not the city itself that is advocating this, so e-mail should be sent accordingly.

The Sci-Fi network has a regular run of Doctor Who at 5 a.m. EST on Friday mornings. Normally I only watch it if I happen to wake, but I expected the season finale, and instead got Partners in Crime. A very good episode but not what I was waiting for. I guess I’ll have to wait for Saturday Night at BBC America.

Oh well at least there is a new page up at Rich’s Blog.

Wasn’t that the argument for voting for the war?

Marc Ambinder explains why Republicans who are in trouble should vote for the stimulus bill:

Now – President Obama’s approval rating is about 70%;

Congressional approval is still around 20%;

After the election, Democrats still have a 9 point lead in generic identification.

The public approves of the stimulus plan by a very large margin – the numbers vary with the wording of the poll question, but it’s at least a plus 40%.

Obama is the most talented political figure of our generation – Boehner and McConnell are, uh, less talented.

Obama’s got the megaphone, they’ve got…

Two points both like the article on strictly political grounds:

Does anyone remember the approval ratings for President Bush after 9/11 and before the votes on the Iraq war? That sure worked out for house members at the time didn’t it?

This is the same advice that might have been given to republicans in the first two years of the Clinton administration. Not taking it gave them control of the house for the first time in 40 years.

Anyone who thinks a vulnerable republican congressman who goes along with this plan will survive a primary challenge is silly. Remember our democrat friends were the same ones who told us McCain was the man to win with.

Bold prediction time: Anyone who thinks Obama will have approval ratings in the 60’s in two years is dead wrong. They will not be above 50%. It would not surprise me to see his ratings in the low 40’s.

In looking for the video for Kryten’s head exploding (Ketchup on Lobster! BOOM) for the last post I found this bit of news at the BBC:

Cult comedy Red Dwarf is returning to TV, 21 years after its initial launch.

The show has been resurrected by digital channel Dave for a two-part Easter weekend special, which sees the cast finally return to Earth.

Written and directed by Red Dwarf co-creator Doug Naylor, the new show reunites the line-up, including Coronation Street’s Craig Charles.

The hit show, which ran for eight series on BBC Two between 1988 and 1999, won an International Emmy award.

This show was always very funny and very offbeat. It will be a very fun time. More details here.
