Dennis Prager:

Our age loves scientific equations. Here’s one you weren’t taught at college but which affects you as much as the law of gravity:

GI – W = E

Good Intentions (GI) minus Wisdom (W) leads to Evil (E)

Prager uses an example that’s obvious — at least to the sane.

Communism, the greatest mass murder ideology in history, was for almost all its rank-and-file supporters rooted in their desire to do good. (This was rarely true for its leaders, whose greatest desire was power.)

The many millions of people all over the world who supported communism did not think they were supporting unprecedented levels of mass murder and torture or an equally unprecedented deprivation of the most fundamental human rights of a substantial percentage of humanity. They thought they were moral, building a beautiful future for humanity — eliminating inequality, enabling people to work as hard or as little as they wanted, providing their fellow citizens “free” education and “free” health care. They were convinced that the moral arc of history was bending in their direction and that they were good because their motives were good.

That’s why leftists have such moral contempt for those who differ with them. Because those on the left are so good, only bad human beings could possibly oppose them.  (…)

The problem with communists and with leftists who don’t consider themselves communists is not that none of them mean well. It’s that they lack wisdom.

As Thomas Sowell would put it, such people fail to ask this question: “And then what happens?” Should someone ask question, the wisdom-less doer of good will give a rainbow and unicorns answer, and that answer will be a revelation.

Take Robert “Beto” O’Rourke and his promise to institute mandatory “buyback” of AR-15s and other firearms should he become president.

“No. I don’t see the law enforcement going door to door. I see Americans complying with the law. I see us working with gun owners, non-gun owners, local, county, state, federal law enforcement to come up with the best possible solution. I have yet to meet an owner of an AR-15 who thinks it’s OK that we have these kind of mass killings in this country,” O’Rourke said when asked by the Washington Examiner about specifics of his plan.

When pressed further about how he plans to enforce his proposal for those who would not comply, he responded, “How do you — how do we enforce any law? There’s a significant reliance on people complying with the law. You know that a law is not created in a vacuum.”

Got that? He won’t use the enforcers to enforce such a law, but the law will be enforced.

Magically.

Beta Male is an easy target — if you’ll pardon the expression — but it’s clear that his “plan” is a perfect example of Prager’s equation. Does O’Rourke want to do good? I doubt it and think that he and other politicians who would forcibly disarm law-abiding Americans have tyranny as their ultimate goal.

O’Rourke knows that his proposal would lead to lots of dead bodies but he’s too big of  a coward to admit it, much less admit that the body bags would be a feature rather than a bug, from his point of view.

President O’Rourke presiding over a disarmed America would have enormous power.

It’s certain, however, there are some voters who do want to do good and who would vote for him or for one of the other Democrat candidates who are promising — as president — to confiscate private firearm property. Such voters want there to be no more mass shooters ever and believe that if the government just takes the tools away, mass shootings will simply stop happening.

Magically.

And it is here where the dearth of wisdom is most glaring among all good-faith advocates of gun confiscation: they think that government can fix humans. This notion has remained pervasive over centuries.

On the contrary, we human beings cannot change our flawed and sinful nature. Politicians can’t. Laws can’t. We can only be mindful of our individual natures and attempt to protect ourselves against those who abandon themselves to their sinful natures, mass shooters being among this number.

Those who are without wisdom believe that humankind is innately good — in spite of the evidence to the contrary that each one of us observes every day.

The perfect sinless, gun-less world that the doers of good say they want is promised by God, But He has conditions which a lot of them aren’t willing to meet. They’d rather let politicians like O’Rourke do the dirty work for them.

And that road will end in the same place it has all the other times.

O’Rourke has no chance of becoming president in 2020, but the front-running Democrats want to take the guns, too.

P minus G equals D. I’ll let you figure out what the variables indicate.

In their continuing policy of ignoring good news about the Trump administration, the mainstream media failed to note the significant decrease in the number of illegals crossing the Mexican border.

The Border Patrol arrested about 72,000 people who tried to sneak across in July — a reduction of almost half compared with the peak of two months ago.

That means that the policy of forcing Mexico to handle more immigrants from Central America has worked well.

Mexico has 26,000 troops deployed to focus on immigration. More than 10,000 of
those are on its southern border with its Central American neighbors, and more than 15,000 others are up north.

Mexico also agreed to expand its cooperation with the Trump administration’s Migrant Protection Protocol, a policy of taking asylum seekers from Central America who cross Mexican territory and sending them back to Mexico to wait for their cases to be heard in U.S. immigration courts.

Customs and Border Protection said some 30,000 migrants have been returned to Mexico under the protocol. Border cities that were so overwhelmed that they declared states of emergency are getting back to normal, with drops of 70% or more in the regions of El Paso, Texas, and Yuma,
Arizona.

The cooperation between the United States and Mexico also means that the number of people being held at the border has dropped dramatically.

While border facilities had more than 19,000 people in custody at one point in June, there were about less than 5,000 last week.

As the Democrats prepare for their debate this week, it’s worth noting that DaTimes and NPR’s most recent polling shows that 67 percent of Americans do NOT favor an open border with Mexico. Twenty-seven percent favor an open border, with 6 percent having no opinion.

If there’s any indication that the Democrats and the media are out of step with the rest of the country, immigration is an example of just how much they both don’t get it.

I have to disagree with this argument at PJ media on Pete Buttigieg on scripture. I think he understands scripture just as I think Andrew Sullivan understands scripture and Fr. James Martin does and the idea is the same.

He wants to remake scripture in general and God in particular in his own image in order to redefine sin because as I can tell you from personal experience it’s a hell of a lot easier to redefine sin to meet your behavior that to change your behavior to avoid sin.

One interesting thing about the Dave Chappelle special on Netflix is that there is a 2nd special that emphasis his close relationship with liberal icons.

Don’t think for one moment that it wasn’t included as insurance against cancel culture.

Didn’t work though.

I confess took too much pleasure from this story of a bunch of vegans getting beaten up by rabbit farmers when they tried to storm their locations and set their livestock free.

All I could think of was the famous scene from the Spencer Tracy move Captain’s Courageous that I’ve written about before when the wealthy brat whose been recused from the passenger liner that he fell overboard from keep disrupting the fishing schooner he’s on.

Troop finally concludes: “I guess there’s nothing left for it.” He rears back and gives Harvey a slap that knocks him flat. Harvey for perhaps for the first time in his life doesn’t know what to say:
You HIT me!
“Now you just sit there and think about it.”
It is here, with the establishment of discipline, that the movie begins to shift.

I suggest those vegans just sit there and think about it.

When will the left learn that no matter how loud they are they aren’t going to change the fact that the number of people who like the taste of Chick-fil-a vastly outnumber the woke who show up for die ins?

Each one of these protests get a lot of media but it keeps getting bigger and bigger. But there’s STILL not one in Fitchburg!

Finally speaking of food something just struck me about this story concerning an academic who suggests we can save the planet by eating each other (in a non-sexual way of course).

For several years we have been teasing the least about all the people who have supposedly died from Donald Trump’s tax cuts, his dropping out of the Paris accords, his court appointments etc etc etc and have sarcastically asked, if all these people have been killed by Trump where are the bodies?

Now we know.

This was the opening weekend of the NFL season and on all the NFL shows the lead story was a player that did not play week 1.

In terms of a sports story it’s Amazing A top five wide receiver in the league, arguably the best, joins the best quarterback of all time on a team that has just won their sixth Superbowl and was already favored to win a seventh this season.

By all reports Antonio Brown is a very hard worker who really throws himself into their game.  He will almost certainly draw double teams which is great news for Julian Edelman and Josh Gordon, Demaryius Thomas, Sony Michael and every other Patriot except for the 53 man on the roster for the Pittsburgh game yesterday.

The oddest thing?  Has a player ever had less leverage with a team he is on?

Think about it for a second. Let’s say for just for the sake of argument that all of the predictions being made by all the Sunday NFL shows are correct and that Antonio Brown’s prima donna act is in full swing in New England and reaches a breaking point where Belichick lays down the law, either shape up or you’re gone.

You’ve got a team that just won a Superbowl without him, a team that was already favored to go back to the game and a Quarterback in possibly the last year of his contract who still think he has something to prove. What’s the downside for the Pats if they cut him? The worst that happens is the betting line get slightly worse on them AND the best that happens is Tom Brady has yet another motivation to prove himself to the pundits who will all declare how losing Brown hurts the Pats chances.

Meanwhile what’s the downside for Brown? You not only become the guy in a contract season who has confirmed to every GM in the league that you are uncoachable, but you also are likely to have the displeasure of having to watch a coach, a GM an owner and the team that drops you hold a Lombardi trophy over his head.

Antonio Brown may not understand this but I bet his grandmother who he called when he was released and his agent does.

I think Antonio’s Brown is going to keep his nose so clean you can eat off of it and if he doesn’t it will be for the same reason that Josh Gordon fails, if he does, because he’s not physically capable of doing it.
