…as democrats who did their best to avoid their constituents before the healthcare votes now claim to fear violence.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer is warning that some of his Democratic colleagues are being threatened with violence when they go back to their districts.

Forgetting the wisdom of taking Steny “They are shouting nasty things in the crowd but we somehow didn’t catch them on our cameras” Hoyer at his word conservatives have a few comments.

Let’s start with Gateway pundit who begins with a debunking:

Russ Carnahan is so frightened to meet with his constituents after his very unpopular vote that he is now lying about a prayer service. This is despicable. Russ Carnahan never said anything when his SEIU supporters beat, kicked and stomped on Kenneth Gladney in a parking lot outside one of his events. These were the same supporters he was sneaking into one of his staged town halls. Instead of apologizing for his supporter’s violence, he is making up stories about peaceful tea party protesters at a prayer service.

Read the whole post particularly the link to the local coverage of the event. Amazing that they didn’t see the threat that the Politico saw from Washington.
Dana Loesch elaborates:

This is a guy who ignored how myself and other conservatives in this area were threatened last summer simply because we dissented with this administration’s policies. His own mother, Jean Carnahan, threw fuel to the fire and tried to whip the vitriol to a frenzy when she attacked his constituents and said that the “teabagger” remarks “bordered on treason.” This is a man who had one of the most under-reported (not to mention caught-on-tape with police report) hate crimes ever to happen at his town hall and the next morning he denied its existence in a press conference. Now this man is going to add further insult to injury by making up malicious intent for people having a prayer vigil? What does he hope to gain from this?

Yes I do seem to recall a black fellow named Gladney who was beaten on film and called a “nigger” in that same area. I don’t believe I’ve seen the politico cover that story, or condemnation from Steny Hoyer.

The lawyers at Power line has this to say:

As for the threats, we will take them more seriously if they result in the cancellation of a public appearance by a liberal due to security concerns. But that never happens to liberals, only to conservatives. It happened again last night. That was in Canada, of course; the home of government medicine and little regard for free speech. No coincidence, that.

In large part, the current focus on threats of violence is aimed at the tea partiers, just as they were accused, apparently falsely, of racism. It is not hard to understand the Democrats’ motives; the tea parties are the most vital force, and likely the most popular force, in American politics, so smearing them is mandatory. But anyone who has attended a tea party rally will consider laughable the idea that the movement somehow tends toward violence.

I’ve talked to people who have decried Tea Parties, invariably they haven’t attended one. For their benefit let me point them to my coverage of last April’s Boston Tea Party or my coverage of the protests last week in Fitchburg and a comparative photo of two events last year.

Sister Toldja brings up an interesting point.

The Weekly Standard’s John McCormack, no stranger to left wing violence himself, makes an excellent point here:

Yes, threats are despicable and should be denounced by all. But wouldn’t it have been nice if CBS had informed readers that the “onslaught of threatening messages” he received last week were from those who supported the health care bill? Isn’t it odd that CBS didn’t cover this story last week?

Indeed. When Stupak was “anti” the bill, just what types of calls and threats was he receiving? Isn’t that worth looking into? Apparently not to the liberals at CBS.

Not only that, but remember: It’s not just Republicans who hate this bill. There were many on the left who hated it because they didn’t think it went far enough. NOW, for example, was outraged over the meaningless EO Obama promised Stupak (which Obama signed today without fanfare). Unions are angry at the Democrat no votes on ObamaCare, and we know very well what some of the more radical union members will do when they’re upset. In fact, even though the AFL-CIO ended up endorsing ObamaCare, many union members still had “Cadillac tax concerns” with the bill – concerns which kept them from endorsing it until the 11th hour.

Glenn Reynolds takes Mr. Hoyer and the media down memory lane saying:

Man up, Steny. Or just, you know, shut up. You’re a hypocrite when it comes to thuggery, and you and your colleagues aren’t credible playing the victim.

Conservatives for Palin talks about the democratic strategy:

They cannot run away from the fact that Barack Obama is the face of their party, so they’ll have to do all they can to create a distraction. Right now, they are throwing the kitchen sink by playing the victim.

This strategy won’t work because the real victims from what happened last Sunday are the American people.

I’ll give Michelle Malkin the last word:

Republicans don’t need physical violence — we’ve got November to look forward to, and subsequently the repeal of Obamacare. Of course, as Steny might say, that’s an unspecified number of threats and just an estimate, but it’s the best I can do.

I’m sure that voting out democrats from the congress counts as violence in Mr. Hoyer’s book.

Update: Texas for Sarah Palin puts it even better:

House Dems who voted for ObamaCare knew that they were doing so at considerable risk to their own careers. They can read public opinion polls just like anyone else can, and the Congressmen didn’t want to face the prospect of going home to their districts and having to explain their votes to their constituents. So the Big Lie was put to use to cover their backsides. When your number one talking point is that you allegedly fear for your own personal safety and that of your family, you can use it to to weasel your way out of taking phone calls, answering e-mails or — God forbid — having to actually interact with those pesky citizens face to face. Some Democrats used this excuse to cancel town hall meetings that they had scheduled last summer.

So the twofold purpose behind this latest tactic by the left is not simply to demonize Gov. Palin, TEA Partiers and Republicans, but to also give the Congressional Dems who voted for ObamaCare a bogus excuse to continue to defy the will of We The People. Be ye not deceived.

Remember, these people asked for these jobs.

Update 2: Lucky for us we have the left to provide the voice of reason.

Update 3: Shhhh Politico corrects without noting a correction. Good think we have an MSM eh? Just to let them know all you have to do is type “update” and put it in bold and add the correction to the bottom, it’s easy. Via the same link from Glenn Moe Lane (who we will see later tonight on this blog) give the Mainstream Media some advice.

Somehow the daily caller has decided that republicans are on their heels:

If politics were war, Republicans would have just been lured from their walled city to chase a force they thought was retreating, only to find Democrats suddenly turning and attacking them head-on.

Even before the bill passed, President Obama had begun pounding the message that the new legislation would immediately benefit many Americans, and cast Republicans who opposed the bill as on the side of greedy insurers.

As the democrats celebrate their great victory against those feared republicans can we gain some perspective here.

There are 222 days to the midterm elections and Democrats have managed a mere 420 days or so into their term Democrats with a 70+ seat majority in the House and a 18 seat majority in the senate managed to get the administration healthcare bill passed. In fact they are still voting on modifications that might take several days or maybe even weeks more done.

They have also managed to energize not only the normal base of the republican party but get thousands of people who were otherwise uninterested in politics involved and networked. These people are meeting monthly and talking to friends. If democrats think they will not be talking about and voting on this in October they are deluding themselves.

This is a great victory? This is having the Republicans on the run? It sounds a lot like the following story of the last days of the Civil War from Shelby Foote’s Magnum Opus The Civil War a Narrative vol 3.

A squad of well-clad, well-fed bluecoats, for example, descended on a tattered, barefoot North Carolina private who had wandered off, lone and famished, in search of food. “Surrender, surrender! We’ve got you!” they cried as they closed in with leveled weapons. “Yes, you’ve got me,” the Tarheel scarecrow replied, dropping his rifle to raise his hands, “and a hell of a git you got.”

Unlike the tarheel vet the republican party is well supplied, well armed and raring for a fight in the fall. In fact the public wants the GOP to keep fighting

A CBS News poll released Wednesday finds that nearly two in three Americans want Republicans in Congress to continue to challenge parts of the health care reform bill.

Yeah that’s a great victory all right.

If the Democrats had any brains they would have passed this a year ago and managed to get republican votes, it would have been so easy it’s frightening. Instead they democrats and their allies in the media victory celebrate a Pyrrhic victory that will doom them in the fall.

The field guide continues its home stretch as we add Tim Mak to the mix:

David Frum isn’t all that popular with conservatives lately but since he sponsored a free beer party at CPAC he was king for a day.

Parts 1, 2, 3, and 4 if you missed them:

By the time I had got back to the main area I had managed to miss John Bolton but managed to see Ann Coulter. She is what you would call a real pip. Not shy about saying what she thinks and even less shy about going after liberals. It was a lot of fun to see what she was saying

Newt Followed up with a speech that was Very Catholic (and a presentation later in the day on Pope John Paul II and the Cold war that was even better).

I was starting to get a bit hungry and restless, the only internal party I had attended was the Smart Girl Politics reception (although I popped in and out of the Allen West Party) where I had the honor to meet the reader who put me over the top.

There was no way I was paying Hotel prices for food so I walked down toward McDonalds and found a line stretching out the door. The manager had said yesterday they were flat out but now they were REALLY flat out.

There was a small greek/meditarian place next to it. Jeff Quinton had mentioned they had a good burger and a Scott Brown special for CPAC. I figured the that was a good plan so I ordered the Scott Brown special.

I was a little confused when another person asked me what I wanted after I had already ordered, I was even more confused when the first lady brought over some kind of drink. It was then that I looked at the special board, apparently the “Scott Brown” was Godiva chocolate liqueur with vodka etc.

Now I’m a very frugal man I had paid for that drink, but it certainly wasn’t the fault of the girl that I didn’t read the board and I wasn’t going to throw the thing away without at least tasting it.

So I waited for the food, and skimmed the drink. Didn’t really care for it and when I left 90% of the drink was still sitting there.

When I got back I had missed Col West’s talk (a shame because he is REALLY good) but was back and ready when it came time for the straw poll results. Before the result I was ticked pink to hear from a young lady named Shana Jean Kluck that the Morning Joe people knew the blog and felt they were treated fairly by me. That statement was the second of the three great pleasures of CPAC.

I actually wasn’t all that surprised with the result. There was a lot of overlap in the selection and the Ron Paul people are were pretty much united. Scott Brown’s election helped Mitt’s vote a bit as well.

The Big event was of course Glenn Beck. Les Phillips came down and sat in the Bloggers Room between Barbara and me. I’m not a big Beck fan (although he is an excellent speech maker) so I spent my time coming and going and taking pictures of people outside the hall. Everybody watching the speech and was spellbound. I must have come and gone half a dozen times.

I noticed that suddenly security was a lot tighter, didn’t realize until later that it was because of Code Pink trying to pull a stunt and bloggers spotting it before it could be done. If only the rest of the party was so vigilant.

When the speech was over people started writing their essays and bodies started leaving. I found myself back at the Bar area where I began, talking and visiting since I didn’t know when I would see these people that I had grown so found of again.

Phillip Berg was still floating around passing out his sheets and being ignored. One of the myths of CPAC that the left holds is that it is full of a bunch of crazies. I noticed that nobody was giving Mr. Berg the time of day. When you went downstairs to the exhibitors area the impressive John Birch society display was also void of actual people wanting to talk to them.

At the bar people talked and visited, Stacy was heading off to the Reagan Pallozza but I wasn’t up to it. I ran into Miss Attila again and we talked for another hour before she left with the Bank of Kev crowd for dinner. She was the third great pleasure of CPAC and I was really sorry to see her go.

From that point I waited, I had an early flight out, Smitty had already headed home and Stacy was supposed to come back with my soft fedora. 10 became 11 and 11 became 12, by 12:30 it was just too late to wait any more. I said my goodbyes to those who were left and took the metro back. Smitty grabbed me at the station and I began packing for the morning.

Just before the plane left I gave Stacy a ring, he got in at 5 a.m. and was not going to be available. I said my goodbyes to Smitty and headed for check-in at Reagan one Fedora shy, but with a bunch of great memories, photos and people that went with me.

Life is very good!
