With the nomination of Sen. J.D. Vance as Donald Trump’s running mate, of course there is renewed interest in his memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, and the Ron Howard movie based on it.

I’ve yet to read book, but I saw the movie in 2020 on Netflix, which distributed the film, and I thought it was a captivating look at Vance’s life.

Both the book and the movie draw on Vance’s upbringing in the southwestern Ohio post-industrial city of Middletown. His maternal grandparents were from Jackson, Kentucky–in the Appalachian portion of the state, which is where Hillbilly Elegy begins. The young Vance (Owen Asztalos) gets a quick lesson in the importance of family loyalty after losing a fight. The Vances, unfortunately, are quite the dysfunctional family, particularly his drug-addicted mother, Beverly (Amy Adams). Eventually, Vance ends up in the care of his grandmother, Bonnie “Mawmaw” Vance (Glenn Close), a chain-smoking, cussing, mean, but ultimately loving authority figure.

The movie contains many flashbacks as the adult J.D. (Gabriel Basso), a US Marine veteran who is a Yale law student, finds his promising future tangled up with his troubled past. His girlfriend, Usha (Freida Pinto), provides him much needed emotional support.

As I said earlier, this is a captivating film, and Howard, a gifted director, makes skilled used of imagery, including perhaps his favorite, water, and a stunning symbolic use of the Middletown rail bridge tunnel.

However, by 2020, Vance was vocal about his conservative beliefs, and he had moved from the Never Trump camp of the Republican Party to being a supporter of the 45th president. Which, in my opinion, led to movie critics, a group which politically consists mostly of leftists, to offer a large dose of negative reviews of Hillbilly Elegy. The Chicago Sun-Times’ Richard Roeper was a notable exception, he gave the movie a four-stars-out-of-four review.

An even worse response came from the 2021 Golden Raspberry Awards, better known as the Razzies. The bad movie answer to the Academy Awards nominated Hillbilly Elegy for three Razzies: Worst Director (Howard), Worst Adapted Screenplay (Vanessa Taylor), and Worst Supporting Actress (Close). However, Close, was also nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for the same role, and Hillbilly Elegy also garnered a Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar nomination.

Was this hatred was triggered by Vance’s politics?

I am certain of that, because also that year, Razzie “winners” included the documentary Absolute Proof, which questioned the results of the 2020 presidential election. Mike Lindell of My Pillow fame “won” Worst Actor for his role in that movie, and Rudy Giuliani “won” for Worst Supporting Actor for his brief role in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.

Voters for the Razzies are not required to see the movies they vote on. Other “winners” of Razzies, not surprisingly, include other conservatives, among them are Ronald Reagan, Dinesh D’Souza, and Jon Voigt.

I apologize for that brief diversion, but the Golden Raspberry Awards needs a serious and prolonged slapping around.

To summarize, don’t believe the critics. Unless you are an unhinged leftist suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome, Hillbilly Elegy is well worth your time.

The lessons from Hillbilly Elegy are conservative ones. Family bonds, hard work, and perseverance, while not a guarantee of success, make success more likely.

I suspect that left-wing critics will have one more group lash-out at Hillbilly Elegy.

And from the only presidential term of Joe Biden comes another lesson: Don’t believe the media. Even movie reviewers can’t be trusted.

Hillbilly Elegy is available for streaming on Netflix, where as of this writing is ranked #4 in the movie category. It is rated R for violence, drug use, and foul language.

I’ll have a longer “Under the Fedora” tomorrow on the subject of Biden’s withdrawal but please keep this in mind over the next 120 days because as of this moment that same media that gaslit you for months and turned on a dime to push Biden out of this race will be back to treating the left with kid gloves and advancing and parroting whatever false narratives the Democrats choose to advance without question.

The Chosen Thunder 2021

What a difference a week makes.

As recently as one week ago tonight was going to be a moment that had been repeated many times in American History in a four year cycle. Tonight is the night when one of the major party candidates for president makes his case publicly to both his party’s convention and to the American people in a prime time speech.

As such a moment it would be of news value and depending on the result of the election and how the speech is received of some history value as well. Something that the chattering classes might talk about for a bit but nothing that would be considered earth shattering

But that was then.

Now instead of just Donald Trump, the former president and GOP nominee making a speech to the nation, it’s also Donald Trump, the man who missed being murdered by the tiniest of tiny margins giving his first public address the nation after facing death.

Salena Zito who had been scheduled to interview Trump that Saturday and who was feet away from Trump on the same grandstand as Corey Camperatore who died saving his wife and daughter interviewed Trump the next day and wrote this report:

“That reality is just setting in,” he said. “I rarely look away from the crowd. Had I not done that in that moment, well, we would not be talking today, would we?”

Talking as he boarded his plane in Bedminster, New Jersey, for Milwaukee, where the Republican National Convention starts Monday and lasts through Thursday, Trump said his speech will meet the moment that history demands. “It is a chance to bring the country together. I was given that chance,” he said.

Early Sunday morning, Trump posted on Truth Social that it was “God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening” and that he would “fear not.” Again, in talking to the Washington Examiner, he invoked “God” for his deliverance.

“This is a chance to bring the whole country, even the whole world, together. The speech will be a lot different, a lot different than it would’ve been two days ago,” he said.

I have written in the past that Donald Trump as a man of 78 is set in his ways. It is very difficult for such a man to change the habits of a lifetime, but if there is anything that CAN do such a thing it’s the hand of God allowing him to walk away from certain death.

One of the most important things for a soul is to see itself in the light of truth and Donald Trump was given the incredible gift of being able to see that every remaining day of his life, is a gift from God.

In short, he’s been given an incredible grace, today we find out what he chooses to do with said grace.

The world will be watching. I suspect he will not disappoint.

Captain Darling: So you see Blackadder. Field Marshall Haig is most anxious to eliminate all these German Spies..
General Melchett: Filthy hun weasels, fighting their dirty underhanded war!
Captain Darling: …and fortunately one of our spies
General Melchett: Splendid fellows, brave heroes risking life and limb for Blighty!

Black Adder Goes Forth General Hospital 1989

I’ve written a lot about how things changed on June 27th because the media was shown to be either willingly incompetent: We didn’t know that Biden had elder issues or lying through their teeth: We knew what shape Biden was in but we weren’t about to tell you and disrupt the Democrat narrative.

This was a solid crisis for the MSM/left because the debate which apparently the Biden campaign figured Trump would duck due to the insane conditions that were set showed every single person in the media and government who INSISTED that those who said Joe Biden had elder issues. It was a real 2 Book of Samuel chapter 12 verse 12 moment when the Prophet Nathan says to David concerning his arranging the murder of Uriah the Hittite

You have done this deed in secret, but I will bring it about in the presence of all Israel, and with the sun looking down.'”

And thus for the last 16 days we’ve had report after report from the MSM concerning the mental health issues of Joe Biden from the same people who denied it for years.

The reaction from the MSM was panic as not only was this going on, but Donald Trump wasn’t stepping on this story media site after media site kept asking why wasn’t Trump stealing the spotlight? Even Meta & Instagram suddenly revoked the bans on Trump’s use of those accounts in the last 48 hours in the hopes that there might be a statement or image to change the story of Election 2024 from Joe Biden and return it to Donald Trump.

Be careful what you wish for.

Before I say another word let me give a shout out to this photographer who as this video shows, ran to the point of danger to get this shot. He showed the same guts under fire that Trump did.

Almost as soon as this assassination attempt took place all over twitter leftists complaining about the assassin missing were trending.

It reached the point where leftist’s online were urging other leftists to shut the hell up.

Suddenly the media turned on a dime. The same media who has for weeks been telling everyone that if Trump is re-elected it would be the end of democracy as we know it, who said Trump must be stopped at all costs, who have compared him to Hitler and INSISTED the comparison was apt.

That same media were not only Shocked SHOCKED that this thing could happen but were doubly shocked SHOCKED that attendees were blaming them:

And of course those who had been calling literally calling him as bad as Hitler

suddenly called for calm and a return to civility.

and were very disappointed that some republicans were upset

Never mind that we had stuff like this for a long time that wasn’t called out by the MSM:

Scott Jennings on CNN who called them out after the debate AGAIN called them out on air.

And the Babylon Bee absolutely nailed it

So once again the media has to turn on a dime and go from:

Trump is the most dangerous person on the planet!

to

Can’t we all just get along?

while pretending they never suggested this was the case. As Ladd Ehlinger put it:

And by an odd coincidence Joy Reid of MSNBC has locked down her twitter account.

Make of that what you will.

I suspect Drew Holden will have a collection of the MSM’s Trump comments in a day or two but here was my question in reply to a George Conway tweet.

So let’s repeat my question and address it to the MSM:

When you kept insisting that Trump was a threat to Democracy, worse than Hitler, a person waiting to become dictator of America were you lying?

And if not then why do you:

Regret the attempted assassination and/or call for the rhetoric to be tempered?

I think we deserve an answer.
