As he raised his head to see that death for him and all with him was moments away, Squadron Leader Bartlett remembered his dismissal of the words of Group Captain Ramsey on the difference between the Gestapo, SS and Luffwaffe.

He was well acquainted with death being at his shoulder and understood that in this escape death held all the best cards, but in that last moment he was surprised that the idea of them all being shot in cold blood after capture still shocked him.

But not as surprised as he was to find it wasn’t the last moment.

“No buts Leutnant Berlin Gestapo is taking no chances with this prisoner. As you & your men have proven yourselves incompetent our party will take him to Berlin ourselves, THEN we will decide if you will pay for this foolishness with your lives.

The Leutnant gulped as he called for the guard.

He was finally free of them all.

A truck would come within a day to take the sly “Ensign” for intense questioning in Berlin, he could leave the “Captain” with Klink, whose pleas for mention in this affair faded as the car pulled away.

And Hogan, Hochstetter didn’t know what was more satisfying, the knowledge that his attempt to grab the fallen glasses led him to the hidden microdot within, his protests that gave the vital clue to the 2^nd in Parker’s hat or his dejection as Schultz led him to the cooler.

He had won, his job was done.
