The right choice

A tough call for the 5th street diner.

Wednesday is Ash Wednesday and for 40 days Catholics will be eating a whole lot more fish.

Their fish dinner is first rate but they expect to see the price of their fresh fish is likely going to go from $4.99lb to $7.99 lb. (Last week they paid $6.99 lb).

With fries and slaw they normally get $7 for their fish. At $4.99 they can make a profit, at $6.99 it is very tiny, at $7.99? Forget it.

Now the local supermarket is offering “previously frozen” Haddock for $4.99 lb this week. So in theory they could pick up some of that and keep the same prices but the fish would not be freshly caught.

When I asked about this. she didn’t have to think once. If the price goes up as they expect, they will raise the price enough to at least break even. When I asked Tina why she told me a fact of restaurant life: When people like what you have you don’t change it.

So it will be tighter belts for the customer and for the owners but the food will still be great and Robert Stacy’s picture is above the corner booth in his Alabama pull over.

Just got back from the Alamo restaurant where I met a friend and mentor from my first computer job for lunch.

The food is good, not as spicy as I’m used to, but the portions were generous and the people pleasant and the ambiance enjoyable particular for a history buff. The tacos were less spicy but had a generous portion of meat and the Fajita was very tasty. I still prefer the Boarder Grille and Bar but I’d eat there again without hesitation.

During that very late lunch I told my friend the entire story of Stacy’s week here in Fitchburg. He was totally fascinated by it.

And then he told me about his Polling place in Sharon Mass. He is a very liberal man in a very liberal town that ended up going for Coakley. He and his wife shake their head when they know I watch Fox and listen to Rush:

When he went to the polling place there were a bunch of Brown supporters in the cold holding signs for their candidate.

There were a pile of Coakley signs leaning against the building facing down.

He was VERY surprised at the Brown win he couldn’t believe that he could pull it off. When I asked him if that’s because he thought democrats would turn out or because he thought it would be stolen if it was close, he demurred saying he thought national democrats wouldn’t allow it. Make of that what you will.

Because of the long story and a train cutting across Rte 117 on the way home I didn’t get to see the Brown swearing in on TV.

But now comes the time to govern. If he does so honestly and above board and makes sure people understand why he takes the positions he does, he will do fine.

Yes, that’s right, folks. Despite the law-enforcement dragnet across Virginia and Tennessee — “Be on the lookout for a black 2004 KIA Optima . . .” – I have arrived at an undisclosed location in Birmingham. Political intrigue and shenanigans are afoot down here in God’s country, and I’ll be updating regularly.

While en route — 785 miles in 15 hours, including a two-hour nap in the car this morning at a rest area near Bristol, Tenn. – I had several phone conversations with Alabama political activists. I’m learning more about the scandals swirling around state attorney general Troy King. A parade of King’s aides have been called before a federal grand jury, and the “Truth On Troy” blog has more.

Down in the Wiregrass Country (2nd Congressional District), Tea Party candidate and Marine Corp veteran Rick Barber slammed the Obama administration’s proposal to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

I met Rick Barber during the Brown campaign, he was up north volunteering to help out. He seems a decent enough fellow. I’d have no problem voting for him. I’m not familar with his opponents in the primary to make a judgement on them.

Q: How do we know that Domino’s new recipe is a hit?

A 2 hour wait on a WEDNESDAY with nothing much going on? that is unheard of.

I guess they were serious about the Pizza Turnaround stuff.

Recipe: Ultimate Goop Stuff

This is what I cooked for dinner tonight:

What you need:

  • Two Frying Pans
  • 1 Whole Pork Tenderloin
  • 1 Sirloin Tip
  • 1/2 of one Chicken Breast boneless
  • 1 Large Onion
  • 1 Green Pepper medium-large
  • 1 pkg McCormick Taco seasoning (mild/regular or hot per your taste) 1.25 oz.
  • Garlic Pepper
  • Onion powder
  • 10 oz Shredded Mexican and/or Mozzarella cheese
  • A 6 oz jar of your favorite brand of Salsa
  • 1 pkg soft Tortilla wraps medium (16 wraps)
  • One Tablespoon minced Garlic (fresh if possible bottled is ok)
  • Olive oil

Prep work:

  1. Heat both frying pans to medium heat add olive oil to coat each pan
  2. Slice Chicken Breast into strips 1/4″ width and 1 1/2-3 ” long
    Slice Pork Tenderloin into 1/2 inch disks and then half the disks.
    Slice Sirloin Tip in 1/2 cubes and then half the cubes
  3. Dice the Whole Onion and Pepper

Directions:

  1. Add Sliced Chicken to 1st Frying pan
  2. add onion powder, garlic pepper and 1/8 pkg McCormick Taco spice (.15 oz if you want to be exact)
  3. Pan Fry 10 min stirring regularly
  4. While Chicken is frying add Peppers and Onions  and Garlic to 2nd frying pan
  5. Add onion power, garlic pepper and 1/4 pkg of the remaining McCormick Taco Spice
  6. Pan fry on medium/medium low heat stirring frequently
  7. Add Pork to Chicken Mixture
  8. Repeat garlic pepper, onion power, McCormick per step 2
  9. pan fry additional 10 min stirring regularly
  10. Add Sirloin tips to meat mixture
  11. Repeat garlic pepper, onion power, McCormick per steps 2/8
  12. Pan fry 15 minutes mixing regularly
  13. Empty pan with Vegetable mixture into the pan with the cooking meat, Add Salsa
  14. Pan fry 10 min
  15. Add Cheese to the top of the Mixture
  16. Take now empty Frying pan and invert it over primary cooking pan until cheese melts into mixture (like goop)
  17. Microwave Soft Tortilla shells 1 min
  18. Remove pan and scoop mixture into Tortilla shells as desired

Serve with Rice Pilaf  Yield 16 servings

Variations:

Frozen Chicken strips can be substituted if this is the case then add the chicken to the mixture last.

If you have “fussy” eaters the veg and meat can be kept apart, prepare a small 3rd frypan and add enough meat and veggies to the pan to satisfy the non-fussy eaters and cook as above, simply skip the salsa & cheese steps and let the “fussy” eaters add their own cold to the mix

If you live anywhere near the Border Grille & Bar, or the Southside Grille & Margareta factory — Border specialty sauce may be substituted for Salsa if you like it hot.

I’ve never cared for Spanish Rice but if you prefer it you can use it instead of the Pilaf.

If you perfer a single meat then remove any of the meat(s) listed and adjust cooking times accordingly.
