Dennis Prager:

Our age loves scientific equations. Here’s one you weren’t taught at college but which affects you as much as the law of gravity:

GI – W = E

Good Intentions (GI) minus Wisdom (W) leads to Evil (E)

Prager uses an example that’s obvious — at least to the sane.

Communism, the greatest mass murder ideology in history, was for almost all its rank-and-file supporters rooted in their desire to do good. (This was rarely true for its leaders, whose greatest desire was power.)

The many millions of people all over the world who supported communism did not think they were supporting unprecedented levels of mass murder and torture or an equally unprecedented deprivation of the most fundamental human rights of a substantial percentage of humanity. They thought they were moral, building a beautiful future for humanity — eliminating inequality, enabling people to work as hard or as little as they wanted, providing their fellow citizens “free” education and “free” health care. They were convinced that the moral arc of history was bending in their direction and that they were good because their motives were good.

That’s why leftists have such moral contempt for those who differ with them. Because those on the left are so good, only bad human beings could possibly oppose them.  (…)

The problem with communists and with leftists who don’t consider themselves communists is not that none of them mean well. It’s that they lack wisdom.

As Thomas Sowell would put it, such people fail to ask this question: “And then what happens?” Should someone ask question, the wisdom-less doer of good will give a rainbow and unicorns answer, and that answer will be a revelation.

Take Robert “Beto” O’Rourke and his promise to institute mandatory “buyback” of AR-15s and other firearms should he become president.

“No. I don’t see the law enforcement going door to door. I see Americans complying with the law. I see us working with gun owners, non-gun owners, local, county, state, federal law enforcement to come up with the best possible solution. I have yet to meet an owner of an AR-15 who thinks it’s OK that we have these kind of mass killings in this country,” O’Rourke said when asked by the Washington Examiner about specifics of his plan.

When pressed further about how he plans to enforce his proposal for those who would not comply, he responded, “How do you — how do we enforce any law? There’s a significant reliance on people complying with the law. You know that a law is not created in a vacuum.”

Got that? He won’t use the enforcers to enforce such a law, but the law will be enforced.

Magically.

Beta Male is an easy target — if you’ll pardon the expression — but it’s clear that his “plan” is a perfect example of Prager’s equation. Does O’Rourke want to do good? I doubt it and think that he and other politicians who would forcibly disarm law-abiding Americans have tyranny as their ultimate goal.

O’Rourke knows that his proposal would lead to lots of dead bodies but he’s too big of  a coward to admit it, much less admit that the body bags would be a feature rather than a bug, from his point of view.

President O’Rourke presiding over a disarmed America would have enormous power.

It’s certain, however, there are some voters who do want to do good and who would vote for him or for one of the other Democrat candidates who are promising — as president — to confiscate private firearm property. Such voters want there to be no more mass shooters ever and believe that if the government just takes the tools away, mass shootings will simply stop happening.

Magically.

And it is here where the dearth of wisdom is most glaring among all good-faith advocates of gun confiscation: they think that government can fix humans. This notion has remained pervasive over centuries.

On the contrary, we human beings cannot change our flawed and sinful nature. Politicians can’t. Laws can’t. We can only be mindful of our individual natures and attempt to protect ourselves against those who abandon themselves to their sinful natures, mass shooters being among this number.

Those who are without wisdom believe that humankind is innately good — in spite of the evidence to the contrary that each one of us observes every day.

The perfect sinless, gun-less world that the doers of good say they want is promised by God, But He has conditions which a lot of them aren’t willing to meet. They’d rather let politicians like O’Rourke do the dirty work for them.

And that road will end in the same place it has all the other times.

O’Rourke has no chance of becoming president in 2020, but the front-running Democrats want to take the guns, too.

P minus G equals D. I’ll let you figure out what the variables indicate.

My post on Canon Turner’s 1st Mass got a lot of attention considering it wasn’t instalanched and I wanted to make a point that might have been unclear.  I have been to the Latin mass before just not a high mass of the type that was on display.  Personally I think it would be healthy for both the vernacular and the Latin masses to both be offered in all parishes.  It would be a perfect illustration of Christ as fully human and our brother while also fully Divine as our God.  I think it’s healthy to remember both.

I don’t see why anyone is surprised that Joe Biden got the decade wrong that RFK & MLK were assassinated.  Given the historical ignorance of the young who tend to vote democrat these days and the attempts to re-write history such a mistake makes perfect sense.  Of course, maybe 1968 identifies as a year in the 70’s

Speaking of re-writing history the NYT 1619 project attempt to reframe a false history as true has actually been going on for a long time by the left.  It’s been a full generation since Mary Lefkowitz Not out of Africa and the backlash she got for refusing to teach myth as history the only difference is now their bold enough to admit it and no amount of facts such as the Vice President of the Confederacy’s attack on the founding fathers for opposing Slavery and considering it evil will stop it.  What happened with Lefkowitz was the broken window theory of this type of thing

On a similar subject that’s a pet peeve of mine on twitter this week the subject of Transgenders altering their birth certificates to change their birth sex/name is something I think is very wrong.  A birth certificate is a legal document recording an actual event.  Namely a person was born of a particular sex to a particular set of parents on a particular date at a particular place.  These are all facts and are not subject to the whims or vanity of others.  Now if you wanted to create a document that was a “certification of live birth”  where a city can certify that a person who has a different legal birth name and a different legal birth sex was in fact born at a particular place on a particular year that would be a fair compromise but we have no business changing the written record.

Finally there is word that Dicks Sporting goods which made a big deal about being woke on guns is considering discontinuing guns altogether.  It actually makes perfect sense when you consider the reaction by gun owners to the company’s previous move:

“I’m not furious, not at all. They made a business decision. I get it. They want to step out of their non-political lane and become corporate activists. I can calmly step out of my lane, too. And given every chance I get, I will not use their products,” he said.

If buyers of guns with long memories are still angry and not going to your stores and you have no interest in getting their business back it’s a logical business decision to stop carrying items that might appeal to that customer base, the remaining guns and hunting items in this case,  and move to a set of items that appeal to the customers you still have.

It’s the same principle that MSNBC and the NYT is using when moving away from reality why give facts when your remaining base will only pay for propaganda?

Well shortly after we made our goal to cover the quote I was given to move the site and pay for a years hosting (thanks all) and authorized the folks who will be our new hots to start the wheels rolling on the move our site rather than just being a pain crashed and burned.

I was told by our current host that the site should be back up within 24 hours, that was 12 hours ago. I’ve been told by our new host who will be also looking to clean things up a bit that they have done nothing that should have brought the site down. IT people at work suspect a hack but I have no evidence to support that theory so I’ll see where things are tomorrow and go from there

Tomorrow I should know more but the are few things more depressing that to have two instalanches wasted on a site that’s down.

——————————–

The only thing crashing worse than my site right now are the Boston Red Sox who were unable to hold a lead against Kansas City on Wednesday. As I write the game is in the top of the 10th but it’s amazing how far the team has fallen in just a few months. But in fairness having lived through 40 years of the curse and having seen them win 4 World Series in 15 years I have a hard time going nuts over a bad season.

In fairness to the Red Sox I did advise them to stand pat. It was good advice as they weren’t going to win anything this year anyways.

————————–

I’ve been spending a lot more time on twitter than I usually do lately and I got into an interesting debate yesterday. The Washington Post put up their piece about how it’s up to 2nd amendment supporters to solve the shoootings problem, my suggestion was brief

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

What was really funny was I had been challenged on the idea that armed citizens could stop shootings. Apparently leftists had never heard of such a thing but an instapundit search for “good guy with a gun” produced so many results that I could have tweeted them to the fellow who objected all night.

The real story of course is he never heard of any of those stories because the national media doesn’t consider them newsworthy. See DaTechGuy’s 3rd law of media outrage for why.

(I still think it’s all because of the post Christian era as I said here)
—————————–

Speaking of stories the MSM doesn’t consider newsworthy the small scale cleanup in Baltimore was a great success that impressed residents and apparently pissed off the Editorial page of the Baltimore sun which seems to consider picking up trash in bad neighborhoods racist.

Of course if they really want all that trash gone fast the easiest way is to hold a Tea Party rally there. History tells us that Tea Party members always leave such places cleaner than when they got there.

Finally as the main site is down here is a quick FYI as to what will happen that was about to go up there before everything died.

Assuming the main site goes back up tomorrow the plan is to do the move over the next several weeks and hopefully fix some site issues in the process. Primary posting will be done here and assuming the main site returns tomorrow there will be some text only posts going up there too. There were in fact 3 I was going to schedule when everything blew up.

Some of my writers will be posting here (like Christopher Harper) some at the other site (once it’s back up) and a few may take some time off, but I still have a lot to say so you’ll be seeing me daily hopefully at both sites but at least here till the move. Once the move is done this will again become the backup site until I can convert it into DaTechGuy’s home for retired bloggers.

Update: The site is back up (still with the problems it had before going down) and there is a lesson there about listening to your guardian angel.

I’m not a big fan of publishing manifesto of killers. The last thing a society that pushes fame and notoriety above all needs to do is give people desperate to feel important a platform. Alas in an instant information age where the value of clicks overwhelm all else, there is zero chance that such sober restraint would take place.

———————————-

As said manifesto has been put out there two things jumped out at me right away. The first was the declaration that the we are destroying the world environmentally. For this fellow’s entire life he has been sold a bill of goods that the world had five, ten fifteen, 25 years left before we’re all doomed. There’s nothing like convincing people they have no future and nothing to lose to get them to do something horribly stupid and/or horribly wrong.

———————————

the 2nd thing of note to me was his conscious choice of a target where people were unarmed and his suggestion of others to do the same. Gun free zone like “drug free zones” are only as free of such things as those willing to follow rules make them and the people most willing to follow rules are not the ones people need protection from. Those who keep insisting on maintaining “gun free zones” are simply managing game preserves for killers.

—————————————

We don’t have a lot of details on the 2nd shooting spree in Ohio other than it was fortunate that police were in the area and thus were able to respond in about a minute, yet there were still multiple fatalities and over a dozen wounded. Now I don’t blame the police they can only do what they can when they get there and they did their job well. If anything illustrates the need for people to be able to carry it’s this situation. Police can only react when they get there, people already on the scene can react at once.

————————————-

Finally I want people ( other than potential Democrat candidates for office who I selfishly encourage to keep spouting nonsense about gun and bullet control throughout the election season ) who are arguing for more Gun control to consider something. Until the campaign against so called “Saturday night specials” guns were ubiquitous everywhere, high schools had gun clubs and shooting teams. Being armed was very common, young people had guns, old people had guns in fact my mother regularly carried a gun.

Yet it is only in recent memory that we have seen these kind of mass shootings on a regular basis, particularly from young people. People who as Stacy McCain put it:

“are succumbing to despair and rage, believing their lives are worthless, without meaning or purpose. Seeing no hope for their own future as individuals, they project their nihilistic sense of doom onto society at large, and resort to a sick “blaze of glory” fantasy”

Stacy McCain Two Mass Shootings in 14 hours. Thoughts on the Gamification of Terror

So that raises a rather obvious question:

If GUNS are the problem, why were we not seeing shootings like this regularly in my youth? What is the cultural difference a cultural difference which has taken two generations to completely work it’s way through society through film, TV and our schools that has so changed the population that might cause our youth to have such a callous attitude toward the value of life, not only their own but of others?
