Old Habits die hard

Last night was kinda busy for me as I had a Knights of Columbus and a Madonna Della Cava meeting scheduled at the same time. (The feast is on the August 15th). We finished at the Knights just in time for me to catch the tail end of the meeting concerning the festival.

After the meeting one of the members that I was close to expressed utter shock that #1 I liked Sarah Palin and #2 I was a republican. It is something I’ve run into on occasion although less these days as more and more people are on the net and are exposed to different points of view.

This is what happens when you try to paint people who don’t have the “approved” set of beliefs a particular way. It leads to such an insulated situation that when you see the reality, it comes as a shock and a half.

It also illustrates to me how history bends over time. She remembers the democratic party of her youth, she remembers the days when democratic were not ashamed of believing Catholics, when Unions actually made a difference in the lives of workers. Those days in my opinion, are gone.

It took me 12 years for my presidential vote to go from Democratic (Mondale) to republican (Dole) and a further 6 years before I changed my registration. It took more than half a century for my mother to be weaned from a party that thinks she is a racist/bigot/homophobe hick and has taken her for granted for years. It may take my friend another 20 years to see what I’m seeing or maybe she will never agree with me on politics at all.

Either way that’s ok, but I doubt she will ever be able to keep that same world view of republicans again.

of the Hymers report from 1988 Money Quote:

[Other Newcaster]: “Phones have been ringing upstairs from people who have had a lot of contact with him. Good and bad, right?”

Anson: “Right, you know I expected a lot of angry phone calls from the story yesterday—angry phone calls from his current members. And there have been a couple of those, but the overwhelming response has been from other former members. Other members than you’ve seen in these two stories, and they confirm everything that the others talk about.”

Forgetting just for a moment the attack on my friend, it is of course natural for a son to defend his father. If one is going to do so perhaps one might consider using one’s head as the charming Roxeanne explains:

If this young man wants to be a lawyer, and has yet to be accepted to law school, he will have the joy of explaining this little entanglement with the legal system on every law school application that he fills out. When he sits for the bar exam and attempts to be licensed in a state, he must also disclose this, in sufficient detail to enable the Character and Fitness committees to determine if he should be set loose upon the country with the ability to practise law. None of those various procedures require one to disclose whether or not one’s father is a cult leader; however, every personal encounter with the legal system must be discussed.

Or as the Sage has tried to explain to Groo: Brains before swords.

Speaking of oddities, Cardinal of the Archdiocese of the Rightosphere? Well I am passing the collection plate a bit these days.

One of the mistakes of the Obama administration was the “I’m in charge” mode on this, taking ownership on the BP stuff early. Now he owns a mess.

Matthews just compared it to the Iranian Hostage Crisis in terms of political cost. That is exactly right and depending on the long term effects of this spill (BP will eventually get it fixed maybe even this week.) it will bleed him the same way the Iranian Hostage Crisis did.

The ultimate Arthur vs Carter experience!

Yet another example of a Mass Pol discovering that decisions have consequences so to speak:

Massachusetts State Rep. Michael J Moran was rear-ended by a 27 year-old illegal immigrant on Friday. Boston’s Fox25 reports,

It gets more interesting he has apparently voted consistently for any kind of legislation to preserve, protect and defend the ability of illegal aliens to remain in the state and get benefits at the expense of the Massachusetts Taxpayer.
Meanwhile the person in question isn’t worried:

“I’m going to go back to my country, Mexico -Nothing is going to happen to me, man!”

Smitty has this to say about the potential coverage:

That said, it will be interesting to watch this “unfortunately undocumented societal victim of Bush-era injustice” move through the system.

Since it is difficult to pursue journalism while pandering, I’d expect this story to get rear-ended by a propaganda-drunk media.

Alas now I’m in Georgia so I can’t get to the bottom of this mess now but it will give me something to do when I get back.
