A Hotel & Bedbugs tale:
Lou Sorkin, an entomologist at New York’s American Museum of Natural History who has been studying bedbug behavior for 15 years, said the nationwide bedbug problem is as bad as he’s ever seen it, not only because of the decline in DDT use but because of increased international travel.
And since many travelers end up in hotels, these critters are giving guests the jitters. Guests are grilling the staff on their bedbug extermination policies, keeping their suitcases away from the upholstery, and pulling off the sheets to inspect the mattresses.
Should we send any bill to the estate of Rachel Carlson?

We pull the bedding apart the moment we enter our hotel. We also store all luggage in the bathroom. It’s neurotic, I admit, but I would burn the house to the ground if I found we’d brought bed bugs home because current treatment with the approved chemicals is useless unless frequently repeated, and thus expensive.
There is a site online which allows its users to rate hotels based upon whether or not they’ve encountered bed bugs in them. I don’t have the URL to hand, but it would be worth a web search.
Wishing you safe and bug-free travels this week…
Pete, The Lonely Conservative published the link below to a site where people file bed bug complaints. You can check out your hotel there:

No, but we can send the bill to Rachel Carson :D (Sorry)
I am as paranoid as anyone about bedbugs. As far as I know, I have never actually shared a bed with a bedbug or any other bug. But for years, I’ve had recurring dreams about cockroaches in my bed, all of which end with me waking up and tearing off the covers in a panic.
I’m just like Aine – whenever I’m in a hotel, I inspect the beds, pull off the bedspread and store it in the closet, and keep my bags off the floor. And I wash all my clothes in hot water when I return home.
I believe the site Aine is thinking of is http://bedbugregistry.com
By the way, I somehow found your blog a few weeks ago when I was searching Google for Doctor Who recaps. We share a love/hate relationship with Morning Joe. You are now bookmarked and Twitter-followed!
I actually follow them on twitter
