Liars figure

Figures don’t lie, but liars figure.

Mark Twain’s quotation couldn’t have described Dana Milbank of the Washington Post any better.

Milbank, one of the most-biased political analysts in Washington, set out to prove that Joe Biden is getting worse press than Donald Trump.

“After a honeymoon of slightly positive coverage in the first three months of the year, Biden’s press for the past four months has been as bad as—and for a time worse than—the coverage Trump received for the same four months of 2020,” Milbank writes. “Sure, Biden has had his troubles, with the delta variant Afghanistan, and inflation. But the economy is rebounding impressively, he has signed major legislation, and he has restored some measure of decency, calm, and respect for democratic institutions.”

Milbank bases his analysis on artificial intelligence evaluation of news sources, providing a “sentiment analysis” in which Biden does not do well.

But Milbank doesn’t list the usual caveats researchers have about such analysis. The simple, one-dimensional sentiment model from negative to positive yields rather little actionable information for a client worrying about the effect of public discourse on one’s reputation. As a result, the AI analysis should be put through the hands of actual humans.

These misgivings would stand in the way of a good story. So, Milbank, the liar, uses his illicit figures. Here is the fog of journalistic war against Trump:

FiscalNote, combed through more than 200,000 articles from 65 news websites (newspapers, network, and cable news, political publications, news wires, and more) to do a ‘sentiment analysis’ of coverage. Using algorithms that give weight to certain adjectives based on their placement in the story, it rated Biden’s coverage in the first 11 months of 2021 and the coverage President Donald Trump got in the first 11 months of 2020.

“Sentiment analysis ranks coverage from entirely negative (-1.0) to entirely positive (1.0), and most outlets are in a relatively tight band between -0.1 and 0.1. Overall, Biden was slightly positive or neutral for seven months, ranging from 0.02 to -0.01. That plummeted to -0.07 in August – a lower number than Trump hit in all of 2020 (or 2019) – and has been between -0.04 and -0.03 ever since. Trump never left a narrow range of -0.03 to -0.04.”

As noted earlier, a human has to sort through these data—an expert human rather than a journalist who’s often guilty of confirmation bias, which basically means he sets out to prove his point rather than interpreting the actual information.

I’ve done what is known as content analysis, where two analysts sift through the news to determine its bias, a system that has its flaws but is far more time tested than what Milbank uses.

But the liar doesn’t let these problems stand in his way as he pontificates on.

“How to explain why Biden would be treated more harshly than a president who actively subverted democracy? Perhaps journalists, pressured by Trump’s complaints about the press, pulled punches. Perhaps media outlets, after losing the readership and viewership Trump brought, think tough coverage will generate interest….

“Too many journalists are caught in a mindless neutrality between democracy and its saboteurs, between fact and fiction. It’s time to take a stand.”

Milbank’s argument doesn’t pass the smell test. It’s difficult for anyone to believe that Biden is getting worse press than Trump. It’s simply a way to try to turn the conversation back to blaming Trump for everything that has gone wrong in the world for the past century.

SHREVEPORT – Perhaps I just woke up in a contrary mood this morning, or perhaps my Community Coffee hasn’t yet kicked in, but in scanning the headlines in The Advocate (Baton Rouge), I find myself bristling at every story.

The lead story announces that Governor John Bel Edwards will add the Covid vaccine to the list of required vaccinations for school children in order for them to attend public school. Personally, I think the Covid vaccine should be like the flu shot: optional. I got the vaccine (and the booster) but it was my choice. I admit, I do struggle with this somewhat. I mean, yes, I firmly believe we shout require polio vaccines and the standard MMR and so forth. Maybe the coronavirus is on par with those diseases, but maybe it isn’t. But this is the thing: in Louisiana any parent can “opt out” of any vaccine with a simple signature. So…. isn’t it just empty casting to “require” this vaccine? Politicking?

The second story that puffed me up this morning was one which explained that the Baton Rouge school superintendent, who has been on the job since January 2021, will get a $10,000 bonus if he meets nine goals (raising ACT scores, submitting a balanced budget, growing LEAP scores, increasing graduation rate, etc.). Admittedly, these are worth goals, but where, I ask, is the bonus for the teachers? The superintendent already makes a $255,000 base salary. Where is the bonus for the teachers on the front lines? This is one of the reasons I never looked back when I retired from teaching: teachers are supposed to be happy with a Starbucks gift card or a Sonic breakfast burrito. “Good job, here’s a jeans day pass!” Bah! This makes me insane.

And then there was the OpEd guy who is trying to say that shortages, rising gas prices, and higher grocery bills have nothing to do with Joe Biden’s policies.  Say what?!

I suspect it is time for me to get another cup of coffee and quit looking at The Advocate. Maybe I’ll go bake some Christmas cookies or something.

Ok This is getting weird

If you’re reading this here you know I finally had enough with my provider and moved my site back to wordpress. I Purchased a couple of small plans set up this new primary blog at Datechguyblog.blog started sending out blast emails to DaPeople to say that’s where I’d be, and then cancelled my plan there.

I then got a form email that said plan would be stopped in about 48 hours.

That was a week ago.

I have absolutely no idea what’s going on but here is what I suspect.

I suspect that the successor to my old provider who bought the company from him set things up to run automatically and basically planed to tweak if necessary.

I think something happened to him, maybe COVID maybe something else but I think he’s out of the picture, either due to illness, death or something else and I don’t know when or if he or anyone else will be back.

And now the automated system will keep running. The customers whose stuff is still in play and working properly will keep paying and be deposited into his account and his own expenses will keep being autodetected from said account.

In theory that means that I can still post there. I’ve had no luck doing so for a full week but I decided to give it a shot when one of my Mag seven writers posted here and this morning a version of this post went up there without a hitch. However as I’ve cancelled I don’t want to be using the site as it might be considered doing so under false pretenses.

I don’t know how long this host will be up but I suggested reader bookmark our new primary site datechguyblog.blog That’s where all our new posts will be going.

That is actually the same site as our old backup blog which was datechguy.wordpress.com which redirects now to http://datechguyblog.blog

With that as our primary site I’ve had to set up a new backup, that is located at Datechguyblog.org

That will be our primary backup site although I’m thinking of using it as the primary site for Dynasty Baseball league stuff.

But anyways if you stop at the old datechguyblog.com head back over here. We already imported all the old post from here over there so there’s nothing there you should need

Eventually datechguyblog.com will redirect here once I figure out what’s going on but when it does is anyone’s guess.

The Place to be is now Datechguyblog.blog
