I’m a sucker for a bargain in fact this morning with daWife at the cassino with her friend until later this evening I’m thinking of Wendy’s run just to get the free large Diet Rootbeer that goes with the breakfast sandwidth. Everyone loves something for nothing.
And that’s what the Biden Administration is trying to turn the Ukraine into.
Let’s preface this by saying that Putin would not mind adding Ukraine back into Russia where it was for a couple of hundred years before the fall of the Soviet Union and note that he was more than willing to go into Georgia and retake bits of Ukraine to regain strategic lands on the black sea.
But a protracted war against a hostile population is always a risk and if you can get the concessions you want without fighting that’s always a plus and frankly the closer the Russian frontier moves toward Poland the more likely the Poles, who have an excellent army, know their history and have no love for the Russians are likely to get involved,
Of course when it comes down to it, such an invasion is all about risk and reward and thanks the the Biden admin the risk has been seriously dropping.
Said administration has been taking action after action to improve Russia’s standing for the last year from cutting off US oil production to backing Russian pipelines. As long as there is an energy crunch Russia is in a strong position.
Glenn Reynolds noted this in a piece at the NY Post:
Back in 2017, Walter Russell Mead wrote: If Donald Trump “were the Manchurian candidate that people keep wanting to believe that he is, here are some of the things he’d be doing:
Limiting fracking as much as he possibly could
Blocking oil and gas pipelines
Opening negotiations for major nuclear arms reductions
Cutting U.S. military spending
Trying to tamp down tensions with Russia’s ally Iran.”
Trump, of course, did none of those things, and indeed the entire “Russian collusion” narrative that the press pushed for his entire presidency has been thoroughly exploded.
But someone is doing these things, right now. I’m talking, of course, about Joseph Robinette Biden Jr., who at his shambolic Wednesday press conference gave Russia the go-ahead to invade Ukraine, though it was quickly walked back by backwalker-in-chief Jen Psaki, his press secretary.
With poll numbers tanking and too many local elections in trouble for the Democrats to steal all of them the Biden administration needs something ANYTHING to change the subject.
The media being in this administration’s pocket wants an excuse to cover something other than the failures of the left in general and the Biden Administration in particular and a potential war in Ukraine is just the ticket. The fact that Putin is not woke on the whole LGBTQ business is to them even bigger villainy than Ukraine so they’re happy to pile on.
Building up a Putin inversion of Ukraine is, in their mind a WIN-WIN for them.
- If Putin doesn’t invade and never planned on it they can claim a victory for stopping a war that wasn’t coming. This is true even if there are humiliating concessions from Ukraine and/or the west
- If Putin DOES invade then he can claim his intelligence was spot on and slap on meaningless and ineffective sanctions while pretending to be a strong leader.
Either way the US press will lap it up.
Both of these things are obscene but here’s the real kicker.
Let’s say, for the sake of argument that I’m right and Putin wasn’t planning on going into Ukraine at all. He sees all of these things going on, he sees the panic, he sees the weakness of the west and their dependence on him, he even sees Biden suggest that Putin can take Ukraine and there isn’t much we can do about it.
Might he decide that he’s is being offered a bargain that’s worth it and decide to move before a stronger and more decisive administration is in place?
I suspect if war comes to Ukraine that will be the reason and we’ll have the Biden Administration to take for it.
I really don’t know much about the situation in Ukraine, but I do know that I don’t trust what Mr. Biden and his spokespersons are saying about it Not that I trust what Putin and the Russians are saying either. I suppose that I trust the Ukrainian government more, but still am skeptical of them as well.
I would take issue with your contention that Putin wants to take over the Ukraine. I think that he wants to take over and take care of the Russian speaking people of eastern Ukraine. And he wants to keep NATO as far away from the heartland as possible. But I doubt that he wants the whole country. What is he going to do with a poor, depopulating area without a lot of natural resources and a population that despises him. Sounds like a Slavic version of Afghanistan.
Did you see the Conservative Tree House story: “Ukraine President Zelensky Tells Joe Biden to Chill Out and Stop Trying to Create a War With Russia” on Jan 28? Check it out.
“Following a phone call last night where Zelensky told Biden to stop telling everyone the Russians were going to attack, a conversation the Biden administration desperately is trying to hide from the American people, Zelensky smartly calls a media press conference so the global media can see him telling Biden, in essence, to ‘chill the hell out’.”
