This will be a sad day for Boston

I don’t care how legal pot has become, this will be a sad day for Boston if there is anything to this:

Tim Wakefield’s name is conspicuously absent from today’s story on Brad Penny by Amalie Benjamin. Is this just an oversight?.

Via this link at Baseball Musings. The actual globe story is here.

Tim Wakefield is one of the most effective and useful pitchers in baseball. He has been both an innings magnet and a versatile player. He has both closed and started and the Knuckle ball means that he can keep it up for many more years without strain.

He has a little bit of a bat (pretty good for a pitcher) and has experience in post season that even predated his Red Sox service. Pittsburgh release of him in the 1993 season after one poor year was one of the most foolish moves in a franchise that has earned it place in what was once called the 2nd division.

In addition he is the longest serving player on the team. To give you an idea look at the Sox Team in 1995 his first year. Clemens , Willie McGee, Mo Vaughn, Rick Aguilera and a Rookie Jeff Suppan. Cripes he was on a Red Sox team with Greg Maddux older brother Mike.

At his age he would not be an expensive pitcher and with the youth on the Sox staff an experienced player (His first playoff appearance was in 1992!). It would be very foolish for the Sox to cast him aside.
