For our liberal friends there is nothing in the conservative mind that can’t be explained by conservative racism. Not even the like or dislike of Soccer:

“When we say Americans don’t play soccer we are thinking of the big white people who live in the suburbs. Tens of millions of Hispanic Americans [and other nationalities] do play, and watch and read about soccer.” In other words, Beck rejects soccer because his idealized “real America” – in all its monochromatic glory – rejects it as well. To be clear, I know a lot of folks who can’t stand soccer. It’s simply a matter of taste. But for Beck it’s a lot more than, “Gee. It’s kind of boring.” Instead it’s, “Look out whitey! Felipe Melo’s gonna get your mama!”

Yes and those “Hispanic” (what exactly does “Hispanic” mean anyway? Are all “Hispanics” from the island of Hispaniola? Since that was named by a European isn’t the very name “Hispanic” a racist imperial label?) also watch baseball and football? Do black Americans favor basketball and football because of some idealized “real American” dream? Jonah Goldberg answers this nonsense in detail only because his readers request it.

As with women’s professional basketball, journalistic and other elites tell the masses they’re supposed to love it – and they just don’t. Moreover they resent being told to “evolve” in their sports tastes.

While I was typing this I watched a bit of the first round Brazil vs. North Korea match. It took one of the power houses of the world 50 minutes to score a goal against one of the planets true basket cases. Now that’s excitement. Goldberg then plays the clincher:

Oh one last thing about this racism nonsense. How many competitors in the World Cup are from nations guilty of ethnic cleansing in the last decade or two? How many are represent racist regimes? How many refuse to play sports against Israelis or let their women play sports (publicly) at all? A reader reminded me of the tendency of European soccer fans to make monkey noises at black players. I googled “monkey noises” and “soccer” and found no shortage of such stories.

But of course the race card like the Spy in Stratego is only allowed to be played upon a particular target.
