Big Finish #34

My Review of Big Finish adventure Spare Parts #34 in the Doctor Who main series, featuring Peter Davidson as the Fifth Doctor and Sarah Sutton as Nyssa is available at Amazon.com here.

This was actually one of the first 10 big finish adventures I picked up, I don’t see how I missed reviewing it before. Since it led to getting almost the entire series that alone should tell you it is worth your money.

BTW you can listen to the trailer for this adventure here. You can purchase a download direct from Big Finish or the CD from Mike’s Comics here.

You end up ignorant of things that reporters and bloggers have known for days:

TAPPER: I talked to a guy who runs a company in Maine that offers boom, and he has – he says – the ability to make 90,000 feet of boom a day. High quality. BP came there 2 weeks ago, looked at it, they are doing another audit today. He is very frustrated, he says he has a lot of high quality boom to go and it is taking a long time for BP to get its act together. Don’t you need this boom right now?

ALLEN: Oh we need all the boom wherever we can get it. If you give me the information off camera I’ll be glad to follow up.

Captain Ed asks the questionof the day:

Er, isn’t this the very information that the White House and Interior are supposed to know before we do? Yet three days ago, Allahpundit featured not one but two videos showing the frustation of Packgen’s management that their decision to produce high-quality boom to meet the expected demand has left them with a lot of unpurchased inventory, while the oil continues its way to Gulf coastlines.

Given this administration the old rule concerning not attributing to malice what can be attributed to stupidity is pretty strong.

…for those who are so keen to do so for the elderly, a quick question:

There is a story about how a sixteen year old sailor who is trying to sail around the world. There was a scare that she might be lost at sea:

A 16-year-old US sailor who went missing while sailing solo around the world has been found safe and well.

Abby Sunderland’s yacht was spotted by an aerial search team in the southern Indian Ocean, midway between Australia and Africa.

Three ships are on their way to pick her up – the first is expected to be with her in 24 hours.

Now I’m delighted that she is ok and will get home safely but I have a question.

Here is a person who on her own volition decided to put herself in mortal danger for the sake of doing something adventurous. Nobody forced her to take the risks she decided to take.

Yet when her parents lost contact ships and resources are being dispatched to get her out of a mess that she put herself into. Would those same people who are so willing to pull the plug on elderly people decide that it is a waste of considerable resources to save her too?

Of course I believe in erring on the side of life but I’d be very interested if they have the same utilitarian arguments in this case?

For no particular reason…

…I’m in the mood for a classic movie line:

By the authority vested in me by Kaiser William II, I pronounce you man and wife. Proceed with the execution. African Queen 1951

I’m actually surprised we don’t see a slightly modified version of this line more often at weddings.
