…because even if the Church of England doesn’t grant them a de-certification and they don’t eventually change their minds, I guarantee their public renouncement of Christianity will be noted where it counts.

Left leaning? Who wouda thunk it!

The gall of the Obama administration on lobbyists in this article is not such a shock but there is one line in the story that jumped out at me:

Next week, the left-leaning ACLU will join with the nonprofit watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington and the trade group the American League of Lobbyists in sending a letter to the White House protesting the policy, said League President Dave Wenhold. (emphasis mine)

Somebody has actually come out and said it. It is a very liberating thing when you say the truth out loud.

Kaus cuts to the chase

Via Glenn Mickey Kaus bottom lines the political price of the president’s moves at GM and Chrysler.

…won’t Obama now “own” the GM problem? If the company shuts down in the near future, costing tens of thousands of blue collar jobs, it will be under executives implicitly or explicitly chosen by Obama. It will be Obama’s failure, not simply GM’s failure, no? A public sector failure, not just a business failure. Doesn’t that make it harder, not easier, for the administration to walk away and force the company into bankruptcy (if, for example, the company’s plans for “viability” continue to fall short after the new 60-day deadline)? And doesn’t that, in turn, make extracting the necessary concessions (by threatening bankruptcy) more difficult as well?

If you are going to be the man you are going to be the man. Economically this is a really nasty move, politically it is a really risky one, but it is the logical result of companies rushing to take federal dough and the strings that come with it.

Update: Talkleft notices a double standard.

…when they stop earning it with nonsense like this:

Palestinian authorities disbanded a youth orchestra from a West Bank refugee camp after it played for a group of Holocaust survivors in Israel, a local official said on Sunday.

Warner Todd Hudson elaborates further:

We are also told by those advocating realpolitik between the west and the Muslim world that their system based on Islam is just as good as anyone else’s, just as we are so often assured that all governments deserve equal consideration merely because they exist.

But, when things like what happened to the members of a girl’s youth orchestra based in the Palestinian camp of Jenin occur, well it’s awfully hard to feel that the Palestinian government is “just like us.” In fact, it’s pretty hard to think that it is anything but inhuman.

He goes on…

These Muslim hatemngers cannot even stomach an inconsequential little concert put on by their own children if those dirty Jews happened to hear their strains. Worse, instead of just quietly attempting to make sure that their children’s orchestras don’t violate their precious hatred of Jews in the future, in knee-jerk fashion they took away one of the few things that made these young girl’s lives bearable and forbade them to play their music, shuttering their practice hall, and ostracizing their teacher.

I wonder if this story rates an Oliphant cartoon?
