Doctor Who Series 5 Episode 4: Time of the Angels

The time of the Angels brings back two of the most interesting characters from the 10th Doctor’s time both created by Stephen Moffat. The first being River Song Played by Alex Kingston from Silence in the Library and the second the Weeping angels from Blink.

Alex Kingston has a lot of fun with this role (and will have a lot more later in the season), the interaction with the Doctor really works. Considering that in real life Kingston is old enough to be Matt Smith’s mother although on camera he is centuries older (I say millennia as I’m an audio fan and the doctor lies 903 is way too low) than her, there is real chemistry here, and there will be more to come.The tweaking of the Angels is acceptable and the cliff hanger at the end of this first of a two part episode really works.

After seeing this episode you won’t be able to wait for the next one, and lucky for you you don’t have to.

Seeing this post via who else but Glenn was no surprise. Considering the circles they come from and they hang with the shock is that free markets managed to get 37%.

This actually explains why they hate Palin so much. Her opinions match the mainstream of this country much more than her foes can admit and they are anathema to everything the elite stand for.

But why talk about this at all when there is a Doctor Who Marathon to enjoy?

Doctor Who Season 5 Episode 3: Victory of the Daleks

At the end of the last episode we found out that the Doctor has given at least one major player in history his number and so off he goes to 1941 to answer the Call of Winston Churchill.

In the middle of the Blitz Winston’s scientists have come up with the ultimate secret weapon, it shoots down planes and even fetches tea, however the doctor finds them strangely familiar.

Ian McNiece’s Churchill is first rate, the basic plot is very good. The Dalek plan is exciting and there are several really comic moments that work.

I don’t like the “did you ever fancy somebody” resolution to the bomb and that keeps it back. I think Amy is not used well here. and that hurts it too.

Doctor Who Series 5 Episode 2 The Beast Below

The Eleventh Hour exists to establish the Doctor, The Beast Below exists to establish Amy. The basic plot a space flying Great Britain has a dark secret in it’s center and the Doctor and Amy are there to discover it.

The idea of the stories of the doctor being passed down through the centuries is pretty good as is Amy’s understanding of the Doctor’s loneliness. One of the weaknesses of the previous two series is how many times the solution to the issue was driven by the companion rather than the doctor, in this episode we see the same but in fairness it was a solution that would not have occurred to him.

The episode also establishes that the crack in the wall is a bigger problem than we all realized.

All in all not a bad episode but ranks pretty low compared to the ones that would follow, not because it is bad but because what is coming is so good.
