…let the left go on about how freedom is restricted in America, how they were repressed under George W. Bush while in Cuba:
Right now there’s a Cuban Mom in Cuba whom Ive also never met in person but I still consider a Mom who had her son die in one of the regime’s prisons simply because he wanted to be a free man.
Let’s elaborate further:
RTVE reports that there have been at least 25 arrests and/or detentions following the death of Tamayo Zapata for the purpose of preventing their attendance to his funeral.
Let’s be blunt: These people are murderous bastards, the people in congress and Hollywood are supporting them are supporting murderous bastards. The people who are gung ho about closing Gitmo while ready to embrace the actual concentration camp that is the rest of the island are at best ignorant and at worst complicit in the support of murderous bastards.
If you want to know the difference between America and Cuba in real life here it is. If you want to see the difference between a democratic administration and a republican one here it is.
And this little story is enough to make you want to punch the screen.
The elite’s treatment of the Gulag that is Cuba is like watching Kitty Genovese get murdered over and over again.

The death of men and women like Orlando Zapata Tamayo – who sought only the simple human dignity that comes from being free – are why I scoff at the left when they complain and harp and bitch and moan about losing their “freedoms” because some terrorist can have his phone tapped, or because they might need a photo ID to cast a vote. My standard response is always “yeah. Right. Live like a Cuban in Cuba and then get back to me.”
Thanks for this post, DTG. Despite the fact that this is an incredibly heartbreaking story – Tamayo was arrested in 2003 and sentenced to 3 years for “disrespect” and was still incarcerated because he considered himself a prisoner of conscience and refused to wear the uniform common criminals wear and refused to be kept with same and thus was subjected to routine beatings – I have had very little interest or coverage from our blogging colleagues on our side of the political spectrum. And i know there are plenty of other important things to write about nowadays, but man, I just dont know what is more compelling than the thought of this man’s mother knowing he was dying – of his own accord – for the freedom of an entire population and not being allowed to even visit him.
Tamayo is an honest to goodness martyr. A peaceful man whose only crime was wanting the very same freedoms we all take for granted.
Never forget I knew about it because you cared enough to write about it. Slowly but surely enough people will care about it to change the minds and heart of those fools who idolize the people responsible for this and many like him.
